Space Choreography

Lee Ell

presents:

A publication on the intersections of architecture and choreography

– by Helmi Marie Langsepp

This is a initiative of architect Helmi Marie Langsepp and collaboration with her Architectural Studio Lee Ell, an environment which explores space in different creative ways.

Architectural Studio Lee Ell gave out spring 2024 the first issue of the publication “SPACE CHOREOGRAPHY I: Heritage,” which binds together the new art of construction and movement. The publication originates from a desire to understand the surrounding space. Space is approached here as a broad concept, a context where buildings, structures, landscapes, and nature with different histories come together.

Generally speaking, space remains stationary while humans do not. It can also be said that space opens and closes depending on how (and whether) humans move within it. Choreography, as a creative movement, which has the freedom to exist outside of designed movement schemes and agreed-upon norms, helps to reveal how space operates. Dance, not serving space here nor seeking to dominate it, seeks partnership to open up the surrounding context. The more filled the space, the greater the potential to stand still and observe from a distance. The first issue, “Heritage,” focuses on space where seemingly there is no room for movement anymore. A place overgrown with expectations and decay, where one might hesitate to step into. However, how can decisions about the fate of a place be made from afar?

Publication consists of cinematographic journey with photos and includes a discussion about old spaces, often herited from ancestors, and contemplates about their meaning.

Through creative movement in space, one can find new approaches to understand, see and experience the room in unexpected ways.

Publication is in two languages – Estonian and English – and visual material is organized as meaningful series. More info about everything: LEE ELL official website.
